Only a foolish knight would praise the thickness of his skin for keeping him unscathed in battle, rather than his armor. How awful would it be for that same knight, having become overconfident after his victory, to go into the next fight dressed only in cloth!
Likewise, what a dangerous place it is to be in, to have fought against one’s troubles and attained victory over them without having trusted in God. It is only by God’s grace that our troubles are lifted. How terrifying for such a one to go into the next trouble thinking he has the power to overcome it on his own!
“It is better to be humble in spirit with the lowly than to divide the spoil with the proud” (Proverbs 16:19 NASB).
